Here’s what will be covered in each of the 7 Weeks:
This 7-week journey will empower you with everything you need to bring your body into a state of lasting wellness and deep connection through time-tested herbal elixirs, tonics and medicinal broths.
week 1: Setting the Stage for Healing. Overview of the Gut, Boosting the Immune System, Calming the Nervous System, and Modulating Inflammation
Your first class is really about setting the stage for healing and optimal wellness. You’ll receive an introduction to Mitten and her intentions for your time together, and dive into some basic terms and definitions.
You’ll learn how and why gut repair is your first step on the road to wellness, and how it’s linked to the immune and nervous systems, as well as inflammation. Mitten also introduces the Enteric Nervous System and her simplistic model of doing less and nourishing more.
Then, we’ll define broths, tonics and elixirs, and explain why we’ve chosen to work with them. You’ll learn how and why aligning your formulations with the seasons can best support your body; and dive into the basics when it comes to preparing for medicine-making. Lastly, Mitten will share her building block ingredients for any broth, and walk you through assembling your first broth together.
week 2: Caring for The Immune System and Soothing the Nervous System. Herbs, Foods and Practices for Immune Boosting and Stress Resilience Through The Winter Months
Rooted in the season of winter, Week 2 invites you to use the darker months to invest in yourself and create the space in your life to deeply nourish your kidneys and the adrenals, addressing feelings of depletion and fatigue. This natural time of rest, retreat, and restoration is so vital for it allows us to fully emerge and blossom in the spring with the vitality needed to tend to whatever new opportunities the change of season may bring.
You’ll learn about the physical seasons of the Earth body, but also the seasons experienced by our own individual bodies, and will be invited to hone in on which season you’re personally in. You’ll learn what foods to eat in winter, how to best prepare them, what to look for from your winter dishes, and some helpful winter habits as well as restorative practices for self care.
You’ll meet several new herbs, including a pungent “driving” herb, a chi tonic known as the “elixir of immortality” and an immune, lung, and blood tonic that helps to clear heat and sinus infections – kids love this one! You’ll learn how to use them all in your kitchen medicine cabinet, and cook alongside Mitten as she walks you through two of her favorite winter recipes.
week 3: Clearing Toxicity and Cleansing the Liver and Gallbladder. How to use Herbs, Foods, and Practices to Safely and Gently Cleanse the Body into Spring
After all the grounding of winter, it’s time to pull that energy up from our roots to fuel our growth and reemergence. Situated in spring, Week 3 focuses on nourishing and cleansing the liver, gallbladder, eyes, and tendons.
You’ll learn about spring broths, especially supportive foods for the season, the introduction of fruits and juices, nourishing the self with all things green, and the ritual of green broth. You’ll also meet some new herbs, including a resilience builder, a detoxifying tonic for the liver, blood and kidneys, and “the mother’s milk of herbs.”
As we work to cleanse the body, we reflect on the need to clear out stagnation in order to promote growth and wellness; and as we detox our bodies on a physical level, we also bring our awareness to areas in our lives that may be toxic or stagnant, and create the space for nourishing elements to sprout forward. You’ll discover how to use foods that nourish the body and mind for the purpose of cleansing, and make a dandelion tincture, a burdock elixir, and Mitten’s nutritive detox broth.
week 4: Caring for the Heart and Pericardium. Herbs, Foods and Practices for Healing the Heart Physically and Emotionally
In Week 4, you’ll learn how to honor your heart’s desires and engage in practices that support digestion and transformation as we settle into the season of summer. While we speed up in some ways during this season, having more time to work in the garden, get active outdoors or indulge in vacation, other areas of our lives slow down – perhaps we’re spending fewer hours at work or requiring less or lighter food on hot days. This simultaneous slowing down and speeding up calls for us to bring balance to the body and to our energy in order to avoid burnout during the summer season.
You’ll learn about optimal summer foods and herbs to work with for restoring the gut microbiome, such as fresh fruits and veggies, proteins and fats that are light, and cooling foods like watermelon and cucumber. We’ll uncover the connection between gut wellness and mental health, and meet several new herbs, including an herb for accessing the boundaried, restful, yin state, a tri-doshic, balancing herb, an herb to stoke your digestive fire, a polychrest lymphagogue, and a pungent heart, womb, and nervous system tonic.
Drawing on traditional Chinese medicine, we distinguish between the seasons of summer and late summer, uncovering best practices for each, such as growing a “broth garden,” fire rituals, and connecting with the energy of the full moon. Lastly, we’ll make a rose, motherwort and hawthorn elixir.
week 5: Supporting the Lungs and Large Intestine: Herbs, Foods, and Practices for Healing the Gut and Soothing the Lungs
This module is all about tonifying the lungs and large intestine. Moving from the expansive nature of summer into the more contractive nature of autumn, we welcome a time of letting go, setting boundaries, and harvesting summer’s bounty. Autumn offers us the opportunity to slow down and is the perfect time to reflect on all we’ve learned thus far in our time together and devote our energies to integration. Autumn is also a time when respiratory illnesses tend to kick up, so it’s a great time to focus on nourishing and tonifying the lungs!
In this class, we provide an overview of fall broth recipes and the best fall foods, including those that are warming and well-cooked, such as soups and stews, root vegetables, cooked greens, and warming culinary herbs and spices. You’ll also learn about some new habits and self care practices for the season, and discover how to harvest and store medicines.
You’ll meet four new herbs, including a protective lung tonic for soothing the mucus membranes, an immune, digestive and nervous system tonic, an activator herb to take you from the paralysis of overwhelm to inspired action, and an herb that’s healing for the teeth and bones. Lastly, you’ll make an oxymel and a tonic broth.
week 6: Fun Advanced Medicine Making and Combining Herbs We’ve Learned
Now that we’ve moved through the wheel of the year, it’s time to have some fun! Ready to test your knowledge and see how much you’ve learned? This week is all about learning how to combine several of the herbs that we have learned in Weeks 2 through 5.
We invite you to take your practice even deeper, breathing deeply and feeling into your body and the energy of the plants as you make your medicines. Adding in this mindful component affects the strength of your medicine for the better. It also helps to bring the body into a safe, relaxed state. When we feel safe, we can begin to heal, so even the medicine-making process can be healing!
You’ll meet your new herbs, including a mineralizing superfood, a bitter digestive chi tonic, the so-called “Queen of Herbs,” and an ally for your eyes; and make a Gut Health Oxymel, a Gut Soothing Tea Blend and an Herbal Cacao Elixir.
Tying all of the seasons together, we suggest general practices for wellness including making broths and herbal infusions for daily consumption, as well as practicing the parasympathetic breath. You’ll learn about ways to adapt your recipes to different seasons, and be reminded of the importance of rest and digest in order to heal and receive.
week 7: Building Your Natural Home Medicine Cabinet and How to Create Lasting Change in Healing
In this final week, we situate you in the phases and foundations of healing, preparing you to take the reins when it comes to your own healing journey and apply your new knowledge outside of class. We’ll tie everything you’ve learned together, empowering you to choose the practices that resonate with you, and better contextualizing some of the many applications for the medicines we’ve made together.
Then, you’ll discover how to build your home medicine cabinet from the ground up using simple, actionable items, and receive Mitten’s suggestions on what else to add, as well as a nifty tip to make the most of what you’ve already got. Before parting, you’ll also receive the wisdom of the medicine woman cycle of transformation, which offers the blueprint for disrupting stuck patterns and creating new ways of being. After all, wellness and illness are not polarities, but rather exist on a continuum – it’s up to us to tilt the balance towards wellness!

Mitten Lowe is a medicine woman, biologist, clinical herbalist, passionate community member, mother, and partner. Mitten works at the intersection of science and spirit. Teaching food as medicine and healing herbs has always been her passion and has been a lifelong path for her that started at a young age. Cooking ancestral recipes and traditional foods at family gatherings, and around special holidays, is a true pleasure for her.
Before any formal education, Mitten learned about food and plant medicine while cooking with her Yaya (grandmother), dad, and aunts. Her dad has been an inspiration for her and has helped to ignite her broth and potion making path. Mitten grew up tending to her high altitude garden together with her dad. She was raised eating healthy foods from the garden, composting, and respecting the land. For her dad, “every day is Earth day”, and she still uses that same philosophy in how she grows and harvests the plants, makes medicine, and conducts her sessions.
